7 Ways to Maximise Wardrobe Space for Your Clothes

Updated: Jun 2, 2023

You might be sharing a room with someone or getting stressed at the sight of your wardrobe mess. Either way, you have come to the right place!

I'm not going to go into wardrobe organisation 101 because I think we all know that, instead here are the 7 most effective ways (tried and tested by me :) ) that will work for anyone with less space and more things!

1. Under bed storage

If you have room under your bed then make the most of it! Instead of pushing everything under your bed, purchase plastic boxes to safely store and organise your personal items i.e. school documents, personal documents, childhood art items etc. Once they are set to one side, dedicate the other half of the place to your clothes. The best clothing items to store under the bed are the ones that take up the most storage in your wardrobe. For me, I store my jeans, and 30 diff t-shirts in these storage bags which are easy to pull out and push back in.

These breathable fabric storage units are best to store any type of clothes, jacket and even bedding.

- They are 100cm long and 50cm wide.

- Can fit under single beds.

Perfect for storing heavy items such s shoes, personal documents, folders and books under the bed.

- 600(L) x 400(W) x 175(H) mm

- Fits under single beds

2. Get rid of clothes you don't wear!

Go through your closet every 2 - 3 months and get rid of clothes that you haven't worn in 3 months. This will free up space in your closet and make it easier to see the clothes that you do wear and need. If you are unsure about keeping or throwing any item away, test to see if you can make at least 3 outfits with it - if not, then it can go to charity.

3. Seasonal clothing rotation

I am surprised to find out that so many people don't store their winter clothes away when a new season comes. Winter clothes take up more space than summer/spring, so divide your clothes into two categories - summer and winter - and only keep the current season in your wardrobe while storing the other season in a vacuum-sealed bag or in a suitcase in the shed or up in the attic to free up space in your closet. This will also help protect your clothing from dust and damage during storage.

4. Fold clothes properly

Instead of hanging clothes that can be folded, such as t-shirts, sweaters and hoodies, pants and cardigans, fold them properly and stack them horizontally on your wardrobe shelves. Don't be shy to use the top and bottom shelf space, you will be surprised how useful that space will prove to be.

If you hate folding clothes and putting them at the bottom of the wardrobe, I would recommend buying these cubes (see below) so you have a shelf for easy access.

These cubes can be assembled as you please. Attach them vertically or horizontally to fit the inside of your wardrobe and stake your clothes on each tier.

- 30 cm x 30 cm

- available in 4, 6 and 9 packs

These bookshelf cubes can be inserted into wardrobes and used as shelves. Stack your jumpers, hoodies, or clothing bit for organised storage.

- size dependent on tier

5. Speaking on wooden tier cubes - DRAWERS

I purchased a plastic 3-tied drawer to place inside my wardrobes and use for tiny bits and trousers. I store my undergarments (pants, bra, socks, sleeves) in one, my folded trousers and pants in the other and any night suits/pj's in the third one. Of course, this is how it works for me but you can use those drawers for cardigans, jumpers, and t-shirts.

These can hold a lot of weight in each draw, so if you have clothing items that make the most mess (undergarments, socks and t-shirt) then this will be the best option.

6. Hijab rings

If you are a Muslim girl and haven't invested in a hijab ring hanger then what are you doing? I find these rings ideal for safely hanging everyday hijab colours and materials. The best thing is, this hanger doesn't crease my hijabs and lets me store up to 6.

These hoops hang in the wardrobe like a normal hanger and can store up to 9 scarves.

- available in more colours

7. Make use of adhesive wall hooks

Adhesive wall hooks can be stuck on any flat surface and can hold up to 31Ib. Stick these inside your wardrobe to hang bags or scarves. You can also stick them on the side of your wardrobe for coats, jackets, scarves bags etc. This will free up space in your drawers and shelves.

Pack of 24, clear silicon hooks.

Remember that a well-organized wardrobe will not only save space but also make it easier for you to find what you need and get dressed in the morning.
