Stylish and Warm: Modest Fashion Ideas for the Winter

Hey/AOA! It's so nice to have you here, on my blog :) BTW you can subscribe to my blog so my entries come directly to your inbox....

UK winter is known to be brutal but this year, it's a killer - anyone else?

Usually, a hijabi's problem is making outfits stylish and modest but in the winter, it's stylish and warm modest fashion.

Making winter outfits stylish but also warm is doesn't have to be hard. So lets break it down.

The Winter Outfit Essential Checklist

Lets keep it real.

Four things we need in every winter outfit (or at least majority) before we step out of the house:

  1. Warm material - wool, cotton, double lined

  2. Lightweight layering - thermal tops and leggings

  3. Wet weather friendly foot wear - boots, leather trainers

  4. Winter accessory - scarf gloves, hat, ear muffs

Styling As A Hijabi

First thing is first, hijab material! If we look at the most preferred hijabs, we are talking about jersey, bamboo and chiffon. Although chiffon can add some oompf to your look, it will not provide the extra warmth. Jersey and bamboo are slightly thicker but lightweight materials which can stay on your head during windy weather while also providing the extra layer of warmth.

If you wear abayas or dresses, you can utilise linen wide leg trousers and turtlenecks as under layers and warmth for your neck. Style your abaya using a contrasting sweater or cute cardigan topped with a wool scarf.

Layering Correctly

Hijabi or non - hijabi, here I am referring to what you wear directly after your undergarments. This could include:

- vests

- thermal top/leggings

- body suit

- turtleneck

- sleeves

Make sure the material for the body suit is thicker to what you would wear in the summer, a ribbed or cotton material would provide warmth and depth to your outfit. To put layering in simple words, follow this formula:

bottom layer = lightweight

top layers = heavy/thick

Upper Body Styling Tips

Play with materials, colours and textures - this will add personality to your outfit and encourage you to experiment will different looks.

Stick to one colour palette and contrast light to dark colours. For example, warm tan with beige, dark green with black, burgundy with beige or even beige on beige (yes, I love beige)

Many people tend to wear dark colours in the winter, but I think keeping it a nice mix of light and dark sets you apart and keeps your options open :)

Don't Ignore Your Legs

Winter bottoms tend to be thick material anyway, thick linen, cotton, jean, wool trousers etc but the way UK temperatures are dropping, you will need something extra down there.

Thermal leggings!!! These will save you from shivers of cold. Opt for thicker material trouser and play with different styles and colours (remember, dark colours and black absorb heat).

The Statement Piece - Coats

Wool coats, fluffy coats, leather jackets, puffer jacks - all fun and games until you wear one and realise it does not keep you warm.

So feel the inside lining and check if it is:

1. double lined and;

2. thick enough to keep your body heat

These kind of coats may be slightly heavier to wear, so make sure you try on the right size and choose the right length of coat for your height and body weight. Sometimes more material = more warmth...

Accessories = More Style

From jewellery to thick wool scarfs - don't hesitate to take on a bit more to secure yourself with your body heat and add to your overall look. If you are afraid to carry load from your scarf or gloves, make sure your bag is a reliable size you can keep your gloves/hats in but also one that will not fall of your shoulders.

Cross body bag or mini rucksack's are best to wear over thick coats and jackets.

TIP: you can wear any bag as a cross body bag over your outfits and THEN wear your coat. This way, your bag will be safe and more manageable to carry.
